THE SCHOOL
WaterSchool at Durgam Cheruvu, Madhapur, Hyderabad, has been established by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in collaboration with the Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCH) as a sophisticated training and recreational centre for water sports.
The objective of WaterSchool is to provide high-quality sailing education to enthusiasts of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. The aim is to foster a love and passion for sailing while instilling in students the skills and knowledge necessary to become confident, safe, and competent sailors.
WaterSchool offers a comprehensive curriculum, designed to teach the fundamental skills of sailing, seamanship, navigation, and safety. Along with practical skills, students will also master the rules of the water, weather patterns, and environmental conservation principles.
WaterSchool’s offering includes training at all levels in a host of water-based sports such as Sailing, Kayaking, Windsurfing & Standup Paddling. The school has well-designed corporate leadership and team-building & bonding programs. Also on the anvil, is the plan to revive work towards the famous Kayakathan and Hydration events that had taken the city by storm in the past.
WaterSchool’s recreational activities are meant for individuals, groups and families looking to relax in a pristine environment that takes them close to nature and into themselves, secure in the knowledge that a well-trained team has their back.
While the ultimate goal of WaterSchool is to be a nursery for future Asian and Olympic champions, apart from serving as a hub for water sports, it also helps enthusiasts to enjoy and respect the ocean, gain self-confidence through their sailing experience, and achieve their sailing goals – whether they be recreational, competitive, or career-oriented.
THE YACHT CLUB
OF HYDERABAD
The Yacht Club of Hyderabad Foundation (YCH) was foundeding year 2009 by Suheim Sheikh with the support of the (erstwhile) Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, as a not-for-profit, performance-oriented water sports club with world-class training systems and a focus on social responsibility.
YCH operates from a well-facilitated and robust jetty with more than 150 boats. Since its inception to date, YCH has trained 1000+ children in the skill and art of sailing. Over 99% of these children are from disadvantaged communities.
YCH has unwaveringly focused on economically challenged children from government schools and sharpened its training capability to the point of producing many national champions in the junior and sub-junior categories.
YCH has so far delivered 6 National champions, 4 State champions, 68 medals, 30 International contenders, and 10 students to training schools run by the Armed forces.
By continuing to train orphans and deprived children – from diverse backgrounds like farming and labour – for national and international stages, and by funding and monitoring their education and nutrition, YCH isn’t merely producing sailing champions but also opening the doors of opportunity for disadvantaged children.
With students of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad going from strength to strength, Suheim, quite literally the wind behind their sails, says, “We have great talent…all we need is better facilities and access to those facilities by everyone. A little motivation at the right time will take these children a long way. Every bit of help from individuals and corporates can help us steer the lives of these bright kids towards brighter shores.”
THE FOUNDER
Suheim Sheikh, an IIT Madras alumnus, in his earlier avatar, ran a successful software products company that developed products for real-time Equities & Options trading, Market surveillance, Anti-money laundering, and Fraud detection for stock exchanges, brokerages and banks. He exited the world of software to pursue his twin passions – Sailing and Photography.
Suheim founded the Yacht Club of Hyderabad in 2009 to make water sports possible for and accessible to all, and continues to helm it as its President. From a dilapidated jetty to a buzzing beehive of activity, with Suheim’s expert steering, YCH has come a long way in making sailing a sought-after sport in its own right.
With YCH starting to make a splash, Suheim turned his attention to training underprivileged youth for free and making them capable and confident of representing India internationally. The success stories he has written are real, and several.
In Suheim’s words, “Sailing is a green sport which doesn’t consume fossil fuels and is very non-invasive. We have a number of water bodies in our country and should make use of them.”
After years of sailing and witnessing the transformative power of the water, Suheim became determined to bring the joys and benefits of sailing to his own city. Through WaterSchool, his brainchild, he hopes to introduce Hyderabadis to the wonders of water, and inspire a new generation of sailors, adventurers, and conservationists.
